KEFALONIA’53: THE NEXT DAY

A documentary about the people who lived through the 1953 earthquakes

Anyone who was ten years old at noon on 12 August 1953 is now eighty-three. And we want to hear their story.

Nikos Anninos speaking in the documentary

“For some, the earthquake was a blessing; for others, it was a disaster.”

01 / THE FILM

It all began with Kefalonia.

It all began with our own family connection to Kefalonia and a desire to record the stories of people who lived through the earthquakes of 1953.

At first, we searched for people who would be willing to share their memories. Along the way, however, we discovered something that moved us deeply: how many people still feel the need to talk about what they experienced, and how vividly this history lives on in Kefalonian families.

So far, we have recorded 22 interviews. Through these accounts, we discover what Kefalonia was like before the earthquake, the moments of destruction, how people reacted, the assistance they received—or did not receive—from the state, the makeshift shelters and relief housing, emigration, and how they remember it all today.

The first excerpts from our interviews, which we have been sharing on Odd Frame’s Instagram, have received an extraordinary response, both on the island and among Kefalonians living abroad. People are getting in touch with us, sharing family stories, recognising people and places, and helping us discover new testimonies.

Konstantina Neofytou speaking in the documentary

“I felt as though I had grown up… for my brother.”

02 / THE ARCHIVE AND THE FILM

A film that will remain with Kefalonia and its people

We want the voices of those who lived through the earthquakes to be heard, and their stories to reach their children and grandchildren, Kefalonians who live far from the island, and anyone who wants to learn about its history.

Our aim is for the film to be screened at film festivals in Greece and abroad, as well as on television, so that these people’s voices can reach as many viewers as possible.

And when the film is finished, we want something else to remain: the testimonies themselves, in their entirety, together with the photographs and historical material we are collecting. An archive that will preserve these people’s memories and allow future generations to hear the history of their homeland from those who lived it.
